The Lulu Project Kicks Off

The Lulu Project. July 4

The Lulu Project was almost derailed today. An older person in Lulu’s life, who we shall call Mrs. Gruffles, told Lulu that she’s nuts for permitting details about her life on the Internet. The person is not Lulu’s mother. Lulu digested Mrs. Gruffles’ advice, and she decided to continue with the Lulu Project.

The exercise for today was a swim in the neighborhood pool. Lulu swam 8 laps which is better than swimming 4 laps. Lulu and I also did an evening hike of roughly 1 mile to see our local 4th of July fireworks show.

Lulu swept the tennis courts at her job at a local tennis club. It was hot outside, so we’ll give Lulu credit for calling this a workout.

We went to Newport to see the qualifying rounds of a great small pro tennis tournament. While watching people play tennis is not technically exercise - it is truly inspirational to watch athletes who are ranked around #500 in the world, a notch below Wimbledon. It would take a truly trained eye to notice the difference between these players and the best in the world. We loved watching a Japanese player, Keisuke Saitoh, who is 5’4” and looks like he could beat anyone. He won his match but then lost in the next round.

Lulu swept courts at her summer job and “walked” our 14.7 year old dog Jenny. It was hot again. It should be noted that Mrs. Gruffles did a 20 minute workout in the tv room at our house.

OK. Lulu’s at home fitness coach finally convinced her to do a quick 20 minute workout in the late afternoon. Lulu did an 8 minute version of The Cardio High warm up followed by unweighted running, holding the back of a chair and jogging in place.

She then did a set of upper body exercises like rows, curls, push ups and tricep presses. We followed these with a set of squats with weights and then a single leg deadlift hold without weights. We used my playlist and finished the workout in 19 minutes. No change of clothes needed. Highly efficient. Footwear featured socks and no shoes.

Lulu reported feeling more awake after the workout. She enjoyed the company of Jenny the dog during the workout.
